Two islands off Stone Town in a single day. Prison Island, Changuu in Swahili, is a small green island with a curious history and a colony of giant tortoises, some of them well over a hundred years old.

A short sail away lies Nakupenda, whose name means “I love you” in Swahili: a ribbon of white sand in the middle of a turquoise sea, with no trees and no buildings – only sand, water and sky. Lunch is served barefoot, with grilled seafood and tropical fruit.

Everything is private: your driver to the port of Stone Town, your own wooden boat and crew, and all the time you want on each island.

It is an easy, relaxed day that suits everyone, from small children to grandparents: short boat rides, shade on both islands and plenty of time to swim, eat and do nothing at all.

Morning · Changuu

An island
with a past.

Your private boat leaves from the beach of Stone Town and in about twenty-five minutes reaches Changuu, between Grave Island, Snake Island and Bawe. The sultans once used it to confine rebellious slaves; at the end of the nineteenth century the British built a prison here, which was never used as such and became a quarantine station instead.

Today the old walls stand among the trees, and the island is a peaceful place of shade, birds, peacocks and butterflies, surrounded by a reef perfect for snorkelling.

A prison that never held a single prisoner.

Meet the
giants.

The island’s real stars are the Aldabra giant tortoises, brought here from the Seychelles as a gift and protected in a large sanctuary. They move slowly between the trees, stretch their long necks for a leaf of lettuce and let you watch them from very close.

The keepers paint a number on each shell that tells its age: some have lived through more than a century of Zanzibar’s history.

Afternoon · Nakupenda

Lunch on a
sandbank.

Back on the boat, a short sail takes you to Nakupenda, a sandbank that changes shape with every tide. The crew sets up shade, cushions and a table right on the sand.

Lunch is grilled fish, calamari, lobster on request, rice, chapati and a mountain of fresh fruit. In between, swim in water as warm as a bath and walk the sandbar from one end to the other.

The sandbank appears and disappears with the tide, so its shape is never the same twice. At high tide it can shrink to a thin white line, at low tide it becomes a small desert in the middle of the ocean. We time the visit so you find it at its most beautiful.

Morning

The giant tortoises

Feed and meet the tortoises, then walk through the forested interior among birds, colourful peacocks and butterflies. The reef around the island is also one of the best snorkelling spots near Stone Town.
